Reading, watching....

Man, I hate January! Well, let me rephrase that. I hate January in the Seattle area! It is so dark and dreary! Today it was cold (36 degrees or so) and rainy and overcast all day long. I don't have a photo to share because I can't muster up the motivation to document just how bad it is. I wish I could just hide under the covers but I have to drive my kids to and from school so I stare at greyness for a lot of my day. Negative, eh? :)

OK, now that I've gotten that off my chest, here's a peek at what I've else I've been doing. I'm reading a fascinating book.I'm enjoying this look at life inside the White House as GWB faces difficult decision including selecting a cabinet, restricting stem cell research, and of course, America's response to 9/11. I realize that I love reading a good autobiography. A completely different autobiography that I've also been reading is Confessions by St. Augustine.It is a difficult read, I confess. Ha ha! I read a review that said Augustine wrote in a circular fashion. That explains my difficulty! I'm a linear thinker, for sure. Maybe I need a guide or a commentary. Have any of you read Confessions?

I've been enjoying Masterpiece Theatre on PBS on Sunday nights - something I actually look forward to in January! This year's show is Downton Abbey and it is a period piece (my favourite!). The best line so far was from Maggie Smith, who plays an aristocrat forced to interact with a middle class family. "What is a weekend?" she asks! You can learn more and also watch it online.Pin It

Where have all the horses gone?

My boys love to ride the mechanical horse outside of Safeway or Fred Meyer. I noticed this past week that they are gone from both stores in our neighbourhood. What a shame! I haven't heard any safety bruhaha about them. What is up?

Am I going to have to take them to Chuck E. Cheese just for the rides? I've been avoiding that place like the plague. :)Pin It

Bad blood

Yep, I have bad blood. I had my cholesterol checked and it is way too high. Sigh. I'm too young! :)

My doctor is sending me to a dietitian to see what we can do with diet changes. Goodbye scrambled eggs, hello oatmeal.

I asked my husband to get his checked since I want to share in the misery. His diet is worse than mine, anyway. Of course there is the chance that his cholesterol is just fine.Pin It

Libraries - no children allowed?

Warning, this is an angry post. I had an upsetting incident at a library and I'm steaming.

Here's the scene. We are in the children's section of the library (not our local one) and my 2 year old is exploring and chatting at a normal volume - believe me he wasn't being loud. I was tidying up some books my 2 year old had pulled out. My 4 year old is sitting a child-sized desk reading aloud from a book we had just checked out. We had been there less than 5 minutes. A "lady" in the adjacent section pops her head over the bookshelves (separating us from this anti-child fruitcake) and asks us to be quiet, we are "disturbing the computer users." Huh??????

Is the library intended for computer use or for reading and promoting literacy? We were in the children's section and my son was reading!

I wish I could go back and give that woman a large piece of my mind. She was not a librarian, by the way. (I think my reaction was complacent since I assumed it was an authority figure.) A child in the children's section reading a book aloud should not be told they are bothering a computer user! It is a small library so we all have to get along. Maybe she should go buy a laptop and pay for her own internet access! If you are that grouchy you need to stay home.

It also really bothers me that she said "users" like there were a whole bunch of people banded together wanting my son to stop reading. What a coward!Pin It
