Back to School During COVID - 19

My boys started school on Tuesday. It has been over 6 month since they were in school since the shut down in mid-March. A is a senior (12th grade) and C is a sophomore (10th grade).

At their Christian private school they have to have temperature checks every morning and wear a lanyard (at the beginning of the day) that says they have been checked at home. Masks are required. The schedule is changed. Longer classes to minimize the hallway congestion. One change this year is that chapel attire is no longer required. No more ties! I'm sad about that since I love seeing the boys dressed up once a week.

I'm very excited about them going to school in person. All the public schools here are online only. Even a private Christian school (King's in Seattle) is online only.

There are lots of fun traditions associated with senior year. A has his own parking spot that he is personalizing by painting it. I'll share a photo when it is completed. There is a senior sunrise gathering on Friday.

We had senior photos taken by Jonathan's friend/supervisor Chris this past weekend. They went to our church since there is an old barn (a perfect background) and also the University of Washington campus which has some pillars as another great background.  I'm saving those photos for sharing later. Some will go in the school yearbook and the deadline for that is in October. Many of the photos showed a non-smiling A. C took his photo on Sunday after church and it was great!

It sure is strange to have an empty house again!

A milestone for my oldest son

This week my oldest son (age 12) is travelling with 49 other middle schoolers to Arlington, Virginia, Washington, DC, and New York City for a history trip. This is his first time away from both of his parents. So far we are surviving. Ask me again at the end of the week!

The trip is very well chaperoned. There are 30 of them - teachers and parents. I considered going but decided against it once I saw the schedule - pretty jam packed. Too fast paced for me. I am fortunate enough to have visited both DC and NYC with my husband.

First Day of School 2014

This year is a year of transition. My oldest son is now in middle school. I can't believe that I just typed that. I still think of him as a little boy. :) He is and was a bundle of nerves about this new year.

He now has a lock for his locker. He changes classrooms after each period. He has many different teachers during the day. He doesn't have recess anymore. He has a slightly different uniform. His day is a bit longer. There is a middle school retreat coming up in November at a Christian camp. They have detention in middle school but I don't think that will be a problem, unless he gets too many tardys, which he'll blame on me. :) I'm thankful that he is on the same campus as his brother and many things are the same.

My youngest son is in 4th grade. He has the same teacher that his brother had for 4th. I like that. I know what to expect. She is a good natured teacher and easy to communicate with. I was able to take a photo of him in his classroom.

He wasn't as nervous on his first day. One of his very good friends (who was a friend in Kindergarten) is in his class so that is fun.
